RIB Insurance FAQS

Do I need RIB insurance in the UK?

RIB insurance is not generally a legal requirement in the UK. However, many marinas, harbours and boating clubs require owners to have third-party liability insurance before they can use their facilities. Insurance also helps protect your investment against theft, accidental damage and other unforeseen events.

What’s the difference between agreed value and market value policies?

With an agreed value policy, you'll receive the value agreed at the start of the policy if your RIB is declared a total loss. A market value policy pays the market value of your RIB at the time of the loss. Topsail offers both options, allowing you to choose the approach that best suits your needs.

  • Agreed value: you’re paid the insured amount in case of total loss.
  • Market value: you’re paid the current market price at the time of loss or damage.

Can I use my RIB abroad?

Yes. Standard RIB insurance covers cruising throughout the UK and Europe, with navigation limits of up to 12 nautical miles offshore. If you're planning to cruise further afield, cover can also be extended to include the Mediterranean or worldwide cruising.

Can I add water sports cover?

Yes. Cover for towing water-skiers and inflatable towable toys can be added if required. Additional optional benefits, including legal expenses cover, are also available depending on the policy selected.

Can I get a discount on my RIB insurance?

Topsail offers a range of discounts for eligible customers, including members of Owners' Associations, Boat Clubs and selected mooring locations. If you're unsure whether you qualify, our team will be happy to discuss the options available.
