We are proud to announce that our charity we will be fundraising for this year will be Plastic Oceans.
This is a subject that all of our staff feel very passionate about, and we are extremely excited to begin our journey in helping this charity further its goals.
To give you a little backstory on what they do, they have been experts on plastic pollution for a decade and believe that “through changing attitudes and behaviours on the use and value of plastics we can stop plastic pollution reaching the oceans within a generation”. There are three ways they are going about achieving this; through education, science and sustainability programmes. All are vital aspects of raising awareness, gaining knowledge, and ensuring current strategies are as sustainable as they can be.
To put in perspective how big of an issue this is, we manufacture over 300 million tonnes of plastic a year, which is the equivalent to the weight of the entire adult population on the planet. Half of this amount is used just once before being thrown away, and so it is a massive amount of waste we are producing constantly. Poor waste management and a lack of recycling facilities only make the problems worse, and now more than 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans every year. This harms such treasured wildlife such as whales, dolphins and turtles and at this current rate it is bound to get worse as time goes on.
