Do you offer offshore sailing travel insurance?

Yes

Are there limits as to how far offshore I can be?

No there are no limits as to how far offshore you can be.

What do I do if I need to make an insurance claim?

Am I covered for ‘acts of god’, e.g. cancellation due to bad weather?

There is cover in place if you are delayed for over 24 hours or your travel is cancelled due to adverse weather, fire, earthquakes or mechanical problems.

Will my medical declarations have an effect on my premium?

This is dependent on your medical condition . Your medical condition may be covered by our policy as standard or you may have to pay an additional premium to include it. For some medical conditions, we may offer an increase in the excess , e.g. you will pay the first part of any claim relating to that particular illness. Alternatively, we may wish to exclude the condition or to provide you with the option to exclude any claim arising from that condition, should you wish.

Do you offer yacht charter excess waiver?

Yes. For our Gold and Silver annual policies there is a limited amount of cover included as standard, you can also increase the amount of charter excess waiver with an additional premium. For our Bronze annual policy and single trip policies this is not included unless an additional premium is paid.

How do I know which area I am travelling to?

Area 1 is the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands.

Area 2 is Europe, including of Republic of Ireland, Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores and the countries bordering the Mediterranean.

Area 3 is Worldwide cover (i.e. anywhere that falls outside of the above Areas)

Am I covered for winter sports?

Winter sports is covered for 7 days with our Bronze policy, 17 days with our Silver policy, and 21 days with our Gold policy. If you are taking out a single trip policy you can pay an additional premium to include Winter sports cover.

Do you offer family insurance?

We do offer family insurance, we also offer a family discount on all our annual and our Yachtsman’s Single policies. The premium and discount amount would depend on the policy type you were taking out.

Why shouldn’t I just insure through my bank or something similar?

Many generic travel insurance policies are not specialised enough to cover you for sailing trips, with many excluding waterborne activities completely. If cover is provided it is often restricted to within 12 nautical miles offshore or only within territorial waters. If you sail offshore then have an incident you may not be covered.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes, we work closely with the sailing community and sailing associations such as the Ocean Cruising Club and Cruising Association and provide a discount for members. We also offer an introductory joint policy discount if you take out both annual travel and vessel insurance through Topsail. Please include any relevant information in your application.

Do you cover blue water cruising?

Yes. We do offer travel insurance cover for long range blue water cruising. Our Tall Ships and Yachtsman’s Gold policies can cover you for your long range trips up to 12 months at a time and renewable annually whilst you are away.

Do you offer a Private medical Insurance (PMI) long-term health care cover?

It is important to note that our Yachtsman’s Travel Policies are an emergency travel insurance only and not a long-term health care plan. If you are requiring a comprehensive Private Medical Insurance which includes routine care then we would recommend that you discuss with one of the specialist Private Medical Insurance providers or your Independent Financial Advisor (IFA) who may be able to assist.

Is there a limit for trips to the USA?

We cannot cover trips to the USA in excess of 89 continuous days. Due to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, (Obamacare) we are legally unable to provide trip durations longer than 89 consecutive days inclusive in the USA.

Do your policies cover non-sailing holidays?

Our travel policies are specifically designed for the sailing community and we would expect that you will undertake some yachting or boating activities within the period. However, our annual polices also cover your travel insurance needs for your Worldwide leisure non sailing holidays. Our single trip policies are designed for use on the water only, but that sad our Yachtsman’s Single policies do not specifically exclude this from the policy.

On Tall Ships Single can I cover additional leisure either side of my sailing trip?

Your policy automatically includes 3 days either side of your published voyage dates for the purpose of travelling to and from the ship. We are able to look to provide cover for additional leisure trips at an additional premium. please advise on dates of cover required when applying for cover and we will provide a quotation for you.

Do you cover residents of the US?

Unfortunately we are unable to provide cover for residents of the US.

I am unable to find my residency on your drop down list?

What activities do you cover under your travel insurance policies?

Please view the last page of the policy wording which lists all activities and sports that we cover at no additional premium. Can you cover under 18 year olds?

We are able to offer cover for under 18’s, however the policy will need to be in the name of a parent or guardian for the purpose of the contract. The online application will ask for this information and it will be noted on your Certificate of insurance.

Can insured persons travel independently on annual cover?

This is fine. Insured persons do not have to travel together.

Can someone under 18 travel independently?

No, under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult at all times for cover to be in place.

How do I work out how long I’m going to be away for the Yachtsman’s Gold?

The Yachtsman’s Gold is an annual policy providing you with a standard 60 days away as standard. Your trip duration should be the maximum time that you are away from your country of domicile (where you usually live) at any one time. So for example if you are intending going away for 10 months but are due to be coming back to your country of domicile for a short period half way through, then the maximum time that you are away will be 5 months away. If you have any doubt then please contact the office for assistance.

How do you work out the Yachtsman’s Gold premium?

The Yachtsman’s Gold premium is worked out on a standard period away of 60 days. Every month that you are intending on being away thereafter is charged on a monthly basis.

Can I extend my maximum trip duration once I am away?

You can extend your policy on a monthly basis for an additional premium, there will be an administration fee however for extending your policy after inception.

Do you provide cover for working crew?

If you are onboard the vessel under a contract of employment as a permanent or part time crew then we would refer you to our Crewman’s Travel products (click here).

If you are delivery skipper or crew under short term contract and for a short period not exceeding 3 months only, then a Yachtsman’s product is suitable.

Am I covered for my personal liability to other people?

Our Yachtsman’s travel products do provide you with personal liability cover. This is to cover claims from other people in the event that you should cause them death or personal injury or damage to their property. It should be noted that on board a waterborne craft this only covers your person to person liability and does not extend to the liability that should more correctly be covered by insurance provided by the yacht or motorboat. If you have any doubt as to the extent of the cover being provided then please contact the office.
